What is Source to Sea?

In a series of week-long trips during 2021, Lee and Jenny travelled the length of the rivers Dee, the Tay and the Clyde by bike, packraft, and on foot, capturing stories as they journeyed through the landscape.

From the crags of the Cairngorms to central Glasgow during COP26, Source to Sea offers an alternative solution to our climate and health crises.

While governments continue to focus on the advancement of technological solutions, the project promotes a message of physical and mental health alongside sustainable, simple, and local travel and adventure.

It’s all about discovering the joy in being everyday active and the simplicity of adventuring from your doorstep, all whilst protecting our natural environment. Travelling sustainably benefits individuals and the planet, and travelling adventurously makes the whole thing that bit more fun for everyone!

Each Source to Sea journey is full of colourful sounds, descriptions and thoughts about the landscapes Lee and Jenny travel through, from Scottish Highland to urban industrial.

Through the podcast series, we hear Lee and Jenny meeting people, animals and birds along the way, and each journey is accompanied by music written specifically to reflect each river by Scottish singer-songwriter Julie Fowlis. Julie’s three songs take inspiration from wild Atlantic salmon, Scottish writer Nan Shepherd, and traditional Gaelic texts, and will be released individually alongside the Source to Sea podcasts.

Through the short films, we explore the beauty and joy that can be found when we travel a little slower and observe the detail in our landscape and relationships. With each film being accompanied by Julie Fowlis’ music, the films speak to the elation, darkness and peace that can be found when journeying from Source to Sea. We also have an additional film called ‘That’s the Problem’ which captures the voices of young people from across Scotland and explores both the joy they find in everyday adventures and the barriers they face when travelling actively.
