a free weekend of camping, talks, workshops and ceilidh dancinG in the scottish highlands

8th and 9th October 2022

The Free Movement Festival is an ‘adventure race’ style event, where participants travel self-supported or by public transport to reach the festival site deep in the heart of the Cairngorms. By encouraging the use of sustainable and active transport we aim to put the emphasis of adventure back on the journey rather than destination.

On arrival at the festival site, there will be a celebration on Saturday night with camping and live music. On Sunday there will be workshops and talks to inspire everyone’s next adventure before the journey back home begins.

We are running an event like this to showcase the fun, enjoyable and varied experiences of using sustainable transport and encourage a modal shift away from relying on a car when accessing the outdoors.

The most effective methods of behaviour change involve creating a positive physical experience, alongside peer-to-peer behaviour modelling and messaging.

These road cycling routes are examples of how you might access the festival and start at bicycle hire shops in both Ballater and Aviemore to the festival site. Fancy creating your own off-road, running, walking route? Komoot is your friend! Sign up and we’ll help you plan your adventure using the app.

The Weekend

Camping

We will have shelter for participants, but you are welcome to bring your own tent. You will need a sleeping bag and mat - but let us know if you are struggling to access these and we can arrange something for you. There will be toilets and access to a shower on your arrival.

Food

The event is fully catered by Spirit and Spice. Your earn your place by sharing the story. of your active journey with us.

Workshops

We are pleased to be working with Yaz at Wilderness Fit to bring a range of activities on Sunday from fitness sessions to route planning.

Sustainable travel makes the outdoors more accessible to a wider audience, which means that more people can gain the health and well-being benefits that connection with green spaces brings us.

This is a small-scale, sustainbale event of around 40 - 60 people who will share their active journeys online along the way, helping us share the important message that the journey can be as worthwhile as the destination.

SEE YOU THERE!
