Budget Boot Camp 2023. Aviemore hostel. 4 nights. 17-21 March 2023. £140

Ramp up your training by joining us in the Cairngorm mountains this March. Perhaps you’re training for an event? Perhaps you’re lacking the motivation to get out as much as you’d like to at home? Perhaps you’ve got an event in mind and are in a total flap about getting ready for it? Or maybe you’d just like to spend some time with a group of like-minded souls for a long-weekend?

This Boot Camp is yours to make what you will of it. We will provide an extensive Komoot collection of riding and running routes, long and short, on and off-road, including hill-interval sessions and downhill MTB sessions. There’s plenty of cross-training opportunities, and in March we expect there will be skiing if you’d rather be in the powder.

We will be there doing our own training and you’re more than welcome to join in with our schedule or plan your own sessions and ride out with others. In the evenings we will gather together again for shared cooking and relaxing at the hostel or out in Aviemore.

For £140 you will get

  • 4 nights accommodation in shared rooms at Aviemore Youth Hostel - this includes a drying room, laundry facilities, and bike storage. The hostel is located close to all amenities.

  • A collection of routes to plan your training around (and a Komoot bundle if needed) sent in advance

  • Evening workshops based on interest which might include: river crossing 101, hike-a-bike technique, trail-side repair bodges

  • Free extra-curricular activities to complement your training such as cold water dips, youtube yoga in the mornings and trips to the pub

Wow. that’s an amazing deal. What’s the catch?

  • Staying at a hostel means that we need to vacate between 10-4, whatever the weather. So after your day’s activities you won’t be able to get back to the hostel until 4pm, even if its snowing and you’re cold and wet. Luckily, Aviemore is full of pubs, restaurants, cafes, a pool, even a spa (seriously, you’ll find me in the spa one afternoon).

  • None of the rides are guided and as such you should feel comfortable following your own gps on your days activities. You are ultimately responsible for yourself and The Adventure Syndicate takes no liability for any incidents whilst on self-directed training rides.

  • Aviemore in March can be mild or it can be a proper winter in the highlands. Expect to experience cold, wet weather. Pack extra layers!

What’s not included:

  • Travel to and from Aviemore

  • Any food. We expect people will naturally begin to cook shared meals together but this can be worked out nearer the time.

  • A set plan for the day-to-day activities (we’ll happily give you a steer!)

Extras: Up your #selfcare by pre-booking a spot at the spa for a back massage and hot tub/sauna afternoon (£60pp) add extra days to your stay (£27pn), or have a daily yoga session (tbc). Information about this will come in an email to participants.

FAQs

How will the camp run?

You can check in at 4pm on Friday and we will gather Friday evening to meet each other, discuss route options, weather and the weekend ahead. We’ll make sure people know what they’re doing on Saturday, have routes downloaded and people to ride with if possible. Saturday, Sunday and Monday there will be Youtube yoga early before our own breakfasts and heading out for the day. At 4pm onwards we can reconvene at the hostel for showers, drying things and thinking about dinner and the next days activities if not already planned. In the evenings there will be optional skills sharing about areas of interest, such as river-crossings, route planning, hike a bike, trail maintenance. If there are any activities planned like swimming or a meal out this will be communicated in advance. On Tuesday we will check out at 10am but you’re welcome to leave bags and head out for another ride before you head home.

Who is this for?

Women, trans, non-binary folk who are up for a long weekend in a beautiful place with a bunch of likeminded people and are keen to get out and active. Having off-road experience is a definite plus but we’ll do what we can to cater for a wide variety of interests.

Aviemore has one accessible room and this camp would be suitable to an individual riding a handcycle provided the accommodation and terrain is suitable to you. An extra bed space for a carer or support person can be provided free of charge. Contact us to discuss this further!

What bike should i bring?

Whatever bike you like or want to ride! Aviemore has something for everybody. You can also rent mountain and fat bikes in Aviemore. We can direct you to the places. You could even just run, walk, or ski. Training is training.

Will the weather impede my training?

We hope not but you never know. We will brief on the best route options nearer to the time and also be on hand to change things around during the camp if snow does become an issue. We’ll make sure there’s something to do each day to help you leave healthy, happy and with a bunch of new friends!

I don’t have a specific training plan or agenda. Can I come?

Yes. Like to ride your bike and/or run off-road and want to do more of it? You’re more than welcome to come and ride bikes with us for the weekend. Dedicating a block of time to your riding = training.
